The International Society of Female Professionals Recognizes Ka`ohimanu L K Dang Akiona
Ka`ohimanu L K Dang Akiona, MD, is a Family Medicine Physician who has recently founded a new urgent care clinic and wellness-focused, aesthetics business in Hawaii, Kohala Coast Urgent Care and Mobile Health and Kalania MD Aesthetics. Practicing in a rural area in the midst of a pandemic and severe physician shortage, she is actively seeing new patients and trying to improve access to quality physician-led care for all.
A Native Hawaiian, research-trained Family Physician, researcher and mother, she loves to read and solve impossible puzzles. She could talk before she could walk, and drove her family nuts constantly asking, “Why?” With over 20 years in different fields of academic research, she gets excited talking about anything from lab and bench science developments to population health trends to translational research and health policy and advocacy for equitable access to education and healthcare.
Most recently, as a lead physician with Premier Medical Group Hawai`i/USA, an independent medical practice founded by Dr Scott Miscovich, she led community outreach and clinical operations which included primary care, mobile health services and a street medicine program focusing on the health needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized. Her team used innovative approaches to address disparities in, and barriers to, access and delivery of healthcare and have been at the leading edge of COVID developments across the care continuum and in a range of resource settings.
Her professional interests also include social justice and health equity advocacy, cultural competency and patient-centered, integrative health models, but she will always tell you that her daughter, `Auli`i, is the best thing she has done with her life.
